ARK Triceratops FAQ — Ability, Uses & Spawn Commands

What does the Triceratops do in ARK?
A two-stage charge attack: hold the secondary attack button (right-click/LT/L2) to build up charge power (shown by a filling heart icon), then release to launch a ram that deals a Crippling status effect on medium-sized targets for 5 seconds. Ramming trees harvests Thatch. A passive Rivalry buff activates whenever a large predator (Rex, Giga, Wyvern, Spino, Yutyrannus, etc.) is nearby, giving the Trike (and nearby wild Trikes) +10% health, +10% melee damage, and +10% damage resistance. Triceratops is a herbivore. Herding animal — nearby wild Trikes will attack if one is aggravated. The Rivalry buff does not function on local host (single player). Tamed via knockout; Simple Kibble is preferred food.
How do you use the Triceratops's ability in ARK?
To charge: hold secondary attack (right-click/LT/L2) until the heart icon fills, then release to ram. Holding longer builds more speed and distance. The charge resets if the Trike takes damage during the run. The head frill has a 0.15x damage multiplier — bullets and arrows deal far less to the head than the body. Rivalry is fully passive and triggers automatically — no activation needed. For berry and thatch gathering, level Melee Damage (second only to Therizinosaur for berry yield). For travel, level Movement Speed to accelerate the charge and cover open terrain quickly — the Trike recovers stamina while charging. For combat, the charge knockback is a powerful tool against smaller targets but requires practice; master the timing and directional control before relying on it. Do NOT charge near cliffs — knockback sends targets over edges. Avoid building up a charge near trees or rocks, which will interrupt it.
What is the Triceratops good for in ARK?
Berry and Thatch harvesting; mid-game combat and knockback control; open-terrain travel via charge sprint; sturdy early-to-mid game pack animal with good weight capacity.
What is the Triceratops spawn command in ARK?
Open the console with ~ and enter cheat summon Trike_Character_BP_C to spawn a wild Triceratops in ARK: Survival Ascended. For a tamed one at a level you choose, use cheat gmsummon "Trike_Character_BP_C" 150. On a server, run enablecheats <ServerAdminPassword> first and keep the cheat prefix.
How do I spawn a tamed Triceratops at a specific level?
Use the builder above, or cheat gmsummon "Trike_Character_BP_C" <level>. The number is the pre-tame level. ARK adds up to a 50% taming bonus, so a value of 100 ends up around level 150. To hit a target level, divide it by 1.5. A gmsummon creature still needs a saddle to ride.
Can I set the Triceratops's level and imprint when I spawn it?
Yes. The builder above generates a single SpawnExactDino command that bakes the level and the imprint into one copy-paste line. The saddle comes as a separate cheat gfi command (it can't ride inside the spawn). To set its colours, spawn it first, then use the ARK Dino Color Builder to build the SetTargetDinoColor commands (with a live preview).
What's the difference between summon, SummonTamed and gmsummon?
summon drops a wild Triceratops at a random level. SummonTamed gives you a tamed one but at a random level you can't set. gmsummon spawns it tamed at the level you specify, the one most people want.
Do ARK spawn commands work in single player and on servers?
Yes. In single player the cheat prefix is optional and no password is needed. On a dedicated or non-dedicated session you must run enablecheats <ServerAdminPassword> once, then prefix each spawn with cheat. Set that admin password without hand-editing files using our free ARK config generators.
Are there other versions of the Triceratops?
Yes. Triceratops has 2 spawnable variants (Aberrant Triceratops, Tek Triceratops). Each has its own class name, in the builder's Variant dropdown and the variants table.
