ARK Coelacanth FAQ — Ability, Uses & Spawn Commands

What does the Coelacanth do in ARK?
No combat-relevant special ability. The Coelacanth is a passive fish valued as a renewable, farmable food and crafting resource rather than a combat or utility mount. Coelacanth is a piscivore. One of the most common creatures in ARK — found in virtually every body of water. Tamed via Fish Basket. An Otter harvesting a Coelacanth yields Silica Pearls and occasionally Black Pearls, making this an accessible early-game pearl source.
How do you use the Coelacanth's ability in ARK?
Tamed via Fish Basket (place basket near fish). Once tamed, it does not eat from troughs — manually place food (fish meat or raw meat) directly in its inventory and force feed if needed. No mounted riding. Level up tamed Coelacanths to increase their size, which increases the meat yield on harvest. An Otter harvesting a Coelacanth will also yield Silica Pearls and occasionally Black Pearls — this is the most practical use of a tamed specimen. Wild Coelacanths serve the same purpose and are abundant, so taming is largely optional.
What is the Coelacanth good for in ARK?
Raw Fish Meat farming (easiest source in the game), Silica Pearl and Black Pearl harvesting via Otter, base decoration in ponds.
What is the Coelacanth spawn command in ARK?
Open the console with ~ and enter cheat summon Coel_Character_BP_C to spawn a wild Coelacanth in ARK: Survival Ascended. For a tamed one at a level you choose, use cheat gmsummon "Coel_Character_BP_C" 150. On a server, run enablecheats <ServerAdminPassword> first and keep the cheat prefix.
How do I spawn a tamed Coelacanth at a specific level?
Use the builder above, or cheat gmsummon "Coel_Character_BP_C" <level>. The number is the pre-tame level. ARK adds up to a 50% taming bonus, so a value of 100 ends up around level 150. To hit a target level, divide it by 1.5. A gmsummon creature still needs a saddle to ride.
Can I set the Coelacanth's level and imprint when I spawn it?
Yes. The builder above generates a single SpawnExactDino command that bakes the level and the imprint into one copy-paste line. The saddle comes as a separate cheat gfi command (it can't ride inside the spawn). To set its colours, spawn it first, then use the ARK Dino Color Builder to build the SetTargetDinoColor commands (with a live preview).
What's the difference between summon, SummonTamed and gmsummon?
summon drops a wild Coelacanth at a random level. SummonTamed gives you a tamed one but at a random level you can't set. gmsummon spawns it tamed at the level you specify, the one most people want.
Do ARK spawn commands work in single player and on servers?
Yes. In single player the cheat prefix is optional and no password is needed. On a dedicated or non-dedicated session you must run enablecheats <ServerAdminPassword> once, then prefix each spawn with cheat. Set that admin password without hand-editing files using our free ARK config generators.
