How to Open the Console in Fallout 4

1

PC only: the console exists on the Steam/GOG/Epic PC release, not on Xbox or PlayStation. Load a save or start a new game.

2

Press the tilde key (~), just below Esc and left of the 1, to open it. Type a command and press Enter; commands aren't case-sensitive.

3

To target an NPC or object, open the console and left-click it. Its RefID shows at the top, and commands like kill or unlock now apply to it. Click again to deselect.

The #1 reason it won't open: the tilde key only maps to the console on US (ANSI) keyboards. On most international layouts a different physical key opens it, so try `, ², ^, |, < or @, or just rebind it. Good news: Fallout 4 does not disable achievements when you use the console, so cheat all you want.

Item & Perk ID Tool

Set a quantity, pick an item or perk, copy the exact player.additem / player.addperk command. Covers the most-searched weapons, armor, power armor, aid, chems, ammo, materials, caps and perks. A few hundred codes, not every trivial misc item nobody's ever looked up.

applies to items (perks ignore it)

Base game items use IDs starting 00. DLC items start xx, a two-digit load-order prefix. Unlike New Vegas there's no fixed default here, so the number depends on how many add-ons you have and what order they load in. Hold a DLC item and run getplayergrabbedref, or check your load order, to find your prefix. Anything that needs this is flagged DLC below.

Pick an item or perk above.

Fallout 4 Commands FAQ

How do you open the console in Fallout 4?
Press the tilde (~) key, just below Esc and left of the 1, during play on PC. There's no console on Xbox or PlayStation, and on non-US keyboards a different physical key may open it instead.
What's the add item command in Fallout 4?
player.additem [baseID] [amount]. So player.additem 0000000F 1000 adds 1,000 caps. Use the item-ID tool above to grab the code for any weapon, armor, aid item, ammo or perk.
What's the god mode command in Fallout 4?
tgm toggles God Mode: infinite health, unlimited ammo, no reloading, no carry-weight limit. If you'd rather still take hits but never actually die, tim (immortal) is the one you want.
How do you add perks with the console in Fallout 4?
player.addperk [perkID] adds a single perk rank. Fallout 4 perks are ranked and each rank is a separate ID, so to reach rank 3 you add rank 1, then 2, then 3 in order. The tool above lists rank-1 IDs for the most-used perks. Add a higher rank without the ones below it and you only get that rank's bonus.
Do console commands disable achievements in Fallout 4?
No. Unlike Skyrim, Fallout 4 doesn't lock achievements when you use the console, so cheat all you want.
How do I spawn DLC items?
DLC item IDs start with a load-order prefix shown as xx instead of 00. Unlike New Vegas there's no fixed default here, so the two-digit prefix depends on how many add-ons you own and what order they load in. Hold a DLC item and type getplayergrabbedref, or check your plugin load order, to find yours, then swap xx for it.
